Handpan Maker Spotlight: Haig Instruments

For this week’s Handpan Maker Spotlight, we want to introduce you to Haig Instruments, a deeply personal project from handpan maker Haig Mastikian, who believes each instrument is a reflection of his soul. Haig's handpan journey began after receiving a handpan with a detuned Ding, which led him to connect with Adrian Ensor of Oasis Sound Sculpture for tuning help—igniting a spark that soon became a passion. With a background in Dentistry, Haig brings a scientific precision and artistic care to his craft, blending his diverse skills into every instrument he makes.

So join us as we dive into the story and journey of this new California handpan maker.

What is your company name? And what is the meaning/inspiration behind it?

"Haig Instruments" I use my own name because these instruments are a part of me and my soul.

Who is your company run by? Do you work alone or with a team of people?

I work alone!

Year Founded:

Early 2022

Location:

Los Angeles, California.

How did you first discover the handpan?

I first first discovered the handpan at a Dead Can Dance concert. David Kuckhermann opening!

What made you decide to start building handpans?

I was delivered a handpan with a ding that was knocked out of tune which I took to Adrian Ensor from Oasis Sound Sculpture to tune. I bought tools and began experimenting, asking questions to many makers and diving deep into forums for answers.

What is your goal as a handpan builder?

To make the best sounding instruments I can make, and instruments that I enjoy playing.

What would you say your instruments are known for?

Attention to detail, especially to timbre. I always try to achieve well balanced instruments.

What are your most and least favorite things about being a handpan builder?

What I love most is the thrill of discovering a new scale or instrument and letting inspiration guide me to create melodies on the spot. What I enjoy least is how physically demanding the process can be.

If you could only play one handpan scale for the rest of your life what would it be and why?

I've realized it's not so much the scale but the instrument itself, especially with the handmade instruments, they are all unique. The minor variation in tuning or blending, to me, makes each instrument vastly different. Sometimes they can sound like completely different keys, even with a consistent making process. If I had to choose I might choose C Ashakiran.

Tell me 1 interesting fact about you, your company, or your instruments.

I am laser focused. If I focus on a task, I can get very consumed. I won't stop learning or trying until I complete the goal. Plus I am also very curious!

Do you take custom orders?

Yes.

Do you have instruments currently available to purchase?

Yes.

Do you have a waiting list? If so, how long?

Yes, 3-4 months.

What is one piece of advice you would give to aspiring handpan makers?

Build strength both mental and physical. Be prepared for the ride of your life.

I got to play a few of Haig's most recent instruments at Pantasia Handpan Gathering this April and let me tell you, they were unbelievable! If you are looking for your next handpan get in touch with Haig sooner rather than later because I am confident his waiting list (and inbox) is about to be full!
