Handpan Maker Spotlight: MAG Instruments

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

For today's Handpan Maker Spotlight, we'll be taking a look at MAG Instruments from Győr, Hungary!

MAG is run by the talented team of Aron, Benedek, Patrik, Peter, and Richard. The various members of the MAG team are not only skilled handpan artisans but also talented musicians (Check out Tosoda Projekt here!) and organizers of the Hungarian Handpan and Worldmusic Gathering (HUG).

I had the chance to talk with Patrik this week to learn a bit more about the MAG story.

What is your company name? And what is the meaning/inspiration behind it?

MAG Instruments - MAG is the root of the word MAGYAR which means Hungarian in Hungarian and the meaning of the word "mag" is "seed" in Hungarian. Some of us Hungarians call ourselves like the "people of seed". We truly believe that we are all seeds, creations of endless possibilities, and evolution and we are all meant to grow during our whole life.

Year Founded:

2016

Location:

Győr, Hungary

How did you first discover the handpan?

Well... all of us differently, but mainly the first time through the internet.

What made you decide to start building handpans?

The love of music, and especially the adoration of handpans.

What is your goal as a handpan builder?

To be a significant, and well-known team in the "army" of handpan-builders, who are meant to bring good vibes all over the world helping to heal the people... and honestly being one of the five best quality handpan brands in the world!

What would you say your instruments are known for?

Quality, balance, long sustain, good looks.

What are your most and least favorite things about being a handpan builder?

The most favorite: meeting nice and interesting people and being able to connect easily through the music of handpan with them. The least favorite: sometimes the pain in the wrist.

If you could only play one handpan scale for the rest of your life what would it be and why?

Hard question... Maybe an extended A-minor (because that was my first own scale).

What's one interesting fact about you, your company, or your instruments?

Besides the "regular" scales we have a strong intention to create crazy things, like 22-note c-harmonic minor, or double-siders.

Do you take custom orders?

Yes

Do you have instruments currently available to purchase?

Yes

Do you have a waiting list? If so how long?

Yes, 2-3 months, depending on the scale.
