For today's Handpan Maker Spotlight, we'll be taking a look at Oasis Sound Sculpture of Los Angeles, California.
OSS is run by Adrian Ensor who got his start building handpans alongside the likes of Terence Jay of Acolyte Instruments and Stevan Morris of Hamsa Handpans as part of the ever-growing Southern California school of handpan builders.
I got to speak with Adrian recently and learn a little bit more about the story of the Oasis Sound Sculpture.
What is your company name? And what is the meaning/inspiration behind it?
Oasis Sound Sculpture - This instrument has been, is, and will always be an Oasis for so many including myself.
Year Founded:
2019
Location:
Los Angeles, California
How did you first discover the handpan?
A friend showed me Yuki's video in 2014 and my jaw dropped.
What made you decide to start building handpans?
I became friends with Stevan Morris of Hamsa Handpans and then Terence Jay of Nirvana (Acolyte Instruments) here in Los Angeles. I used to go to Jay's shop in his garage and watch him sink shells. I began sinking shells for Nirvana from that point and then expanded.
What is your goal as a handpan builder?
To make magical instruments that are portals to a meditative state. A timeless space of endless music and dreams. I honestly feel like this is the only true magic I have ever come across. The power of a beautiful pantam in your lap is like nothing else. A true spaceship to inner-space.
What would you say your instruments are known for?
Being warm and sparkly!
What are your most and least favorite things about being a handpan builder?
I love having built a magical gem and then being able to share it as well as be transported playing it. Least favorite would have to be the physical struggles of it being hard on the body and the endless barrage of seemingly insurmountable unexpected problems that arise.
If you could only play one handpan scale for the rest of your life what would it be and why?
Fully Diatonic 50cm D Kurd 16. The D Kurd 9 on the top shell is the holy grail of scales while the diatonic bottom creates a fully compositional instrument.
What's one interesting fact about you, your company, or your instruments?
While I was immediately in love with playing this instrument, I never imagined I'd be building them.
Do you take custom orders?
Yes.
Do you have a waiting list? If so how long?
Yes, 6-8 weeks.
